Recent Floods Problem in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a low land. Flood is natural calamity like cyclone. When our land goes under water we call it flood. Bangladesh is a land of rivers and canals. Most of her lands are low lying. Besides, it is a monosoon country. As a result every year flood visits this country.

The main cause of flood is heavy rainfall. When it rains heavity in the hilly region, the water rolls down to the rivers are shallow. They cannot carry down all the water of the sea. Another cause is to make the country well communicated, roads and high ways are made hither and thither. Hence the free flowing water is checked and the area becomes over flooded.
No doubt, flood is a curse. It causes a heavy loss of livers, shelters, crops, roads and ways, schools and colleges, cattle etc. Flood of 1968,`87, `92 have done a great loss of our country. 1998`s flood is the greatest flood of the century. 54 districts out of 64 remained under water for about two months. As a result, Bangladesh has to face much difficulties. International countris have come forward for her help. The recent flood has made the normal life miserable. All sorts of development programmes of the country have been stopped. The effect of flood may also be serious. Many fatal diseases like cholera, dysentery,
diarrhoea etc. break out for want of clean drinking water.

Our country is poor one. If she is to face such natural calamity every year, then no development is possible to change the lots of the people. So a well-planned irrigation system should be made to control these sorts of unusual floods.
Floods carry heavy silt, which makes the land alluvial and fertile. It washes away filth and impurities from our land.
Now-a-days our flood problem is so great that it is recognised as our national problem. As active citizens we all should think about it and should be up and doing to control flood.
