Smash Bros and Mortal Kombat Killed Soul Calibur's Main Gimmick
Soulcalibur instantly made a name for itself in the world of fighting games by implementing weapons into the formula. It has since become one of the most beloved fighting game franchises, although it had another big gimmick that further helped to cement its place in the pantheon of fighters like Tekken, Street Fighter, and Mortal Kombat. Starting with Soulcalibur II, each game included a guest fighter from another popular franchise. Link, Spawn, and Heihachi appeared in Soulcalibur II, KOS-MOS from Xenosaga starred in Soulcalibur III, Darth Vader and Yoda made their way into Soulcalibur IV, and so on down the line.
