Tea and Its Appeal to Men
Tea plant is an ever green shrub. Now-a-days tea is the most popular drink all over the world. Modern man can not think of starting a day without having a cup of tea. It refreshes the mind and gives energy. Almost all people take tea once or twice a day.
Tea is grown abundantly in China, Indonesia, Sreelanka, Bangladesh and India. Bangladesh earns a lot of foreign currency by exporting tea. It is also a cash crop. Lots of people are engaged in tea production. Tea grows well on the slope of the hills or hilly region. It needs excessive rain water but water must not stand on its root. It should away and dry away soon. Tropical countries grow plenty of tea. In Bangladesh, there are many tea gardens in Sylhet, Chittagong and Rangamati. First seeds are sown in one place. Another field is ploughed well. When plants attain a few inches high, they are transplanted in rows in the tea gardens.
They are manured well and weeds are pulled out. When they grow four or five feet high, they are vtrimmed down. When the tea plants are about four years old, the first leaves are plucked. The plants give more and more leaves until they are ten years of age. The leaves are plucked three times a year. The first crop of leaves is plucked in April, the second in June and the third in July. The plants are cut down when they are ten years old. New shoots then grow from the roots. The coolie women carry the tea leaves to the mill. The leaves are then spread in wire trays. When they arev dried, They are rolled over with machnes. The leaves are then again spread out on the floor of a moist room. There they are completely dried and become black and crisp.
Thus the leaves are made ready to be used for drink. Though tea is a popular drink, it spoils our appetite and tells upon our stomach. When a man becomes addicted to tea very much, he may suffer from many stomach diseases. Government should take positive steps to increase production of tea and also to increase the tea gardens. The wages and facilities for the coolies should be increased too so that our country may earn more foreign currencies by exporting tea. Similarly govt. should provide all facilities to improve the quality of our tea.
